Presentation of Solidarité Africaine pour Haïti (S.A.H.A.)

The Solidarité Africaine pour Haïti (S.A.H.A.) association is an organization registered at NO STC-37547 at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Work, which promotes the increase in the economic and social well-being of girls and women.

Its general objective is to participate in the development of communities through the satisfaction of the basic needs of disadvantaged populations, especially girls and women

More specifically, we want to:

  • To promulgate quality education for all through the provision of adult literacy training, teachers in disadvantaged schools, offers of scholarships in disadvantaged schools, support and tutoring for children in and out of school in reading, writing and arithmetic
  • Promote the circular economy through the creation of "self-sufficient villages" in disadvantaged communities, implementing endogenous development economic models based on waste recovery
  • Facilitate access to health in disadvantaged communities through mobile clinics, awareness campaigns, creation of community health centres, training of populations in first aid

Context of the creation of S.A.H.A.

Access to health and education are two primary needs shared by all. Although they are not adequately met in developing countries, the situation is more problematic from the point of view of women and girls. Three main findings have been pushed to set up this project.
The first observation is the overall difficulties encountered by women and girls in accessing health care. The low economic means they earn, when they are in operation, allow only a small percentage of this population to pay for their care and courses. In fact, 76% of the Haitian population living with US$2 per day, and among them women receive less than 40% of men's income from doing similar work. Adding the fact that 73.3% of women are inactive, it becomes easy to foresee the difficulties they experience before being able to receive treatment or training.

The second observation is at the level of education. Several stratifications are observed: the school enrolment rate varies according to the area of habitation, age and sex. At the secondary level, 37% of girls are enrolled in school compared to 45% of boys. The economic factor comes into play again because education generates direct costs (schooling) and undirect (uniforms, textbooks, lunch boxes, transport, daily diet, etc.) : about 40% of the revenue is injected into it. If the family does not have enough money to send all the children to school, the girls are those who will be sacrificed. Parents are used to entrusting them with household chores and the care of the little ones. It is not normal that a woman with higher education and in a position of influence feels privileged, when the right to education is a human rights that are supposed to be materialized in the life of every human being.

The third observation concerns the efforts of public and private institutions in the face of these social injustices. Indeed, the actions of the government to reduce these situations of dissatisfaction among civil servants seem insufficient to cover their needs. It is becoming necessary to take more citizen action to help Governments.
It is in this context that S.A.H.A. was created.

Presentation of the S.A.H.A. quality education project

The Education for All project responds to the specific objective of S.A.H.A.: To promulgate quality education for all.

Based on these different points, we have decided to set up various activities that meet the needs of our target:

  • For the context, we decided to act on the socio-economic context and the characteristics of our beneficiaries, by offering scholarships to girls with academic excellence.
  • We are also acting at the level of the means of implementation, more precisely at the level of equipment, by offering a school kit allowing us to equip our beneficiaries.
  • Regarding the process, we have chosen to intervene both on the institutional and social or family process: in fact we offer trainings to build teachers' capacity employed in the schools attended by our fellows; In addition, we offer reading and writing support outside hours of lessons, with the textbook M AP LI NET ALE and JE PARLE LE FRANÇAIS.
  • As for the results obtained, we are monitoring and demanding that the S.A.H.A. scholarship holders maintain their average of 7.5 or higher, in order to continue to benefit from the scholarship.

In order to launch all these activities, we are looking for funding.
Monitoring and evaluation indicators will be put in place to evaluate each activity and aspect of our project.
